So I'm guessing JB> Bob's troublesome volume is FAT-32 The files are FAT32 (and FAT16), but Win98 identifies them as NTFS over the network. I have one partition formatted FAT16, and the Win98 partiton is FAT32. WfW, Notepad-32, and the 16-bit programs read and write to both partitions without any trouble. WORD2000 barfs when I try to save changes, giving a message saying it can't create the file because it's out of memory, or the *disk* is full or write-protected. 32-bit WRITE tries to save but sends the file into cyberspace. Aha! I wonder if NTFS is what's causing Word 2000 to barf when it tries to write changes? WfW wouldn't have a clue about NTFS, so it just goes ahead and does it... and it works because it isn't really NTFS! I wonder which end is calling it NTFS: Samba or Win98? In Linux, I mount the windows drives as vfat. At least it gives me a new clue to start chasing... thanks for that.
