Hi one, and all,
I'm reading a book by Jack Dann, THE REBEL, an
alternative history of Jimmy Dean, which assumes that he didn't die in
his little Porsche in 1955. Dann is an American living in Melbourne,
who started off writing SF, but lost the plot and went right out
there.
He's very good... but he's been living in Australia too long. I
nearly fell off the lounge when he had James Dean say, "That's a joke,
Joyce."
I'm not sure if Dann did it intentionally (as a joke, Joyce), but I
was right into the Dean character, and as soon as he "said" it I had
visions of Graham Kennedy wearing his bald wig with Rosie Sturgess as
Joyce, which sort-of spoiled the Jimmy Dean image in my mind.
There was a time when it was the Irish who added appealing images to
the English language; now it's up to us rebels here in Oz. "Dickhead"
is so much better than butthead, and "the fat lady sings" is really
graphic. What a shame the rest of the world will never understand
"that's a joke, joyce."
Regards,
Bob
