| subject: | Samba and dirty dancing |
Hi all,
I'm really confused by Linux networking, SAMBA, and dirty
dancing. In fact, I'm losing patience...
This Linux machine also boots Win311 and Win98, with their FAT16 and
FAT32 directories. Linux reads them nicely, and I want to export those
directories to the Win98 machine in the network, but Linux is like an
onion - yu get one part working okay, and there is another part under
it stuffing up
This last one has me stumped.
First, I couldn't export the Windows drives because they weren't
mounted (I couldn't mount them from the Windows end of the network). I
fixed that using fstab, a configuration file that mounts drives when
Linux boots.
Then the drives were read-only because fstab mounts root as the
default, and I was logging on as bob the builder. So... I got fstab to
mount them as bob. I'm bob on Linux and bob on Windows too, I log on
as bob twice, and Linux thinks I've been there all along.
No more read-only... but now WORD2000 (WORD7) won't save! I get a
long-winded message telling me I'm out of memory (standard Microsoft
cure for everything) or the drive is stuffed.
My old Word for Windows 2.0c works okay (running under Win98). I
just map all the FAT drives to J: (Word2 knows shit about networks)
and it works no worries... J:\c; J:\d, etc.
The two notepads work okay (16-bit and 32-bit). QEDIT works okay but
Word2000 refuses to save, and when I tried it with 32-bit WRITE it had
a go, but then it said "unexpected fault occurred when saving" and
totally wiped the file! Christ knows *where* it went!
The weird part is that I can erase files, drag and drop (on the
networked drive), anything but save in Word7 (and WRITE is lethal). I
don't know if it's a bug at the SAMBA end, or the Win98 end.
Has anyone tried to network Windows drives on a Linux machine across
to another Windows machine using Samba? As you blokes have just
finished dicussing, there is no FTP at the Linux end, so how else can
I do it?
Word 2000 flat refuses to save, and WRITE is lethal! My guess is
that Internet Explorer is fucking up (again), but I can't see how.
Regards,
Bob
