| subject: | Re: Corporate variant (SUS) of Windows Update |
From: "Frank Haber"
Rich, perhaps the example below will help me to understand this trusted
verification stuff in WinUpdate. Recently, an Nvidia driver update has
appeared in (!!) Critical Update for some XP users of the low-end MX420
card, popular in Dells, HPs and Gateways. I'd never seen this before. Not
only does it violate previous practice of not forcing a hardware update, it
could mess up users' computers who are blithely trusting XP Autoupdate. In
some cases, Autoupdate can force a down-version on someone. In others, it
is offered, then won't install. I've heard of one report of its installing
and replacing a subtly different OEM card's drivers.
Could you explain "four-way match, below?"
Name redacted to protect the nice guy who offered this. More history:
Nvidia put this driver up "to fix crashes." I know no more
details of the crashess. I've never heard of any particular trouble with
this card - it usually just lies there like a lox and makes video, fairly
slowly.

HWID=Hardware ID (this identifies what card you have to the operating
system HW=Hardware (i.e. your nVidia card) We and nVidia know of this
problem...
Basically because 53.03 does not contain a 4 part HWID match for your
device lt installs a 2-part HWID match.
Windows Update only lets 4-HWID's onto the site but it always sees a 4-part
HWID match as a better match
then a two part so it offers you the update even though you have a newer
driver installed.
To fix this in the future nVidia will try and post drivers that have 4-part
HWID matches on their website.
You will be able to uncheck the box by the update but it will stay there
untill you get a driver from nVidia with a 4
-part HWID that is newer. Hopefully nVidia next driver posting will have a
4-part HWID match for your HW.
Let me know if you have any further questions... Thanks,
