The problems come when you try to do something different. Do a testparm in a Linux shell and see the actual SMB settings. There are hundreds, and most of them contradict each other if you only change one. For instance "read only = no" and writeable = yes" mean the same thing, but you can end up with both saying the opposite thing, in which case the one that comes last rules okay. And they are not in alphabetical order. It's fine if you use a standard setup, but I prefer the road least travelled...to work it out for myself. It works, Samba is fabulous, actually quite simple, but the setup is a shambles and the documentation only makes it worse.
