You really need to take a look at the file permissions for the /etc
directory Bob. As a general rule this is a world writable directory, and it
is ALWAYS a world readable directory.
In short, the DIRECTORY itself offers no security whatsoever.
Any security for anything in this directory is on a per-file basis, so even
if you do liken this directory to the Windoze registry it isn't like you'll
be giving the hackers access to everything on the system.
