years ago. The IBM 3380 HDA (head/drive assembly) has two sets of
read/write heads on it, each is addressed separately, each 3380 box
contains 2 HDAs. I was looking at the device addresses one night (I
worked nights and was bored) and noticed that the SYSRES and backup
SYSRES devices appeared to be on the same HDA (different read/write
heads, but the same physical assembly); I pointed that out in a note
to the systems programmer who'd set it up and he said I was right and
thanked me profusely. Had that particular HDA gone south before he
reconfigured the system and moved the backup SYSRES to a different HDA
(which he did promptly after receiving my note), the system would have
been unusable as the OS (in this case MVS) - and the backup copy of it
- would have been gone.

The backup partition is used to backup stuff a different physical
drive, not the data in the data partition, so no worry.
