subject: Pangasius Cat?

   Hi Stephen,
SC>Can anyone assist.
SC>I recently aquired a fish described as a Pangasius catfish from a
SC>neighbour who was moving.
SC>I desperately want to find out as much as poss about it. Its correct
SC>name, correct behaviour, how it will react to other types of fish
SC>etc. It is currently about 10inches long and velvety black in colour
SC>which fades to a silvery white underneath. It has a large mouth which
SC>is the width of its head and has four small feelers below its mouth.
SC>It is active most of the day and does not interfere with the other
SC>fish (Gouramis, silver shark and upside down catfish). Food wise it
SC>appears to favour Tubifish but if offered will not hesitate to devour
SC>even large earthworms. It has a worrying habit of occasionaly swiming
SC>about furiously and hitting the sides of the aquarium. No obvious ill
SC>effects suffered.
SC>Any help appreciated
I think the fish you describe is probably Pangasius Sutchi, it should
be alright with your other fish, but all catfish are generally
PREDATORY, so anything it can get in its mouth could be eaten. Generally
this fish is a bottom dweller and they have poor eye-sight and a
somewhat nervous disposition, they will occasionally surface to breath!
it can apparantly grow to 39 inches:-/ but usually 8-10inches in
aquariums:-> (so Iam told) Baensch Aquarium Atlas Vol.1 Page 509 gives a
good photo & write up, hope I have been of some help
    Cya Nigel.
P.S. If you need any further help, drop me a line:>
