There were 9 killed by the quake itself, and about 150 by the tsunami's that
followed, among them my 4th cousin and his sons. So in terms of lives lost,
last year's quake was at least 1000 times worse.

The Alaskan earthquake was the second biggest earthquake ever recorded (the
biggest was in Chile, in 1960), but because of the low population density, the
topography, and the construction of the houses, there were relatively few
deaths.

As you say, last year's quake was certainly more destructive from a human
point of view, because many more people in the affected area were living on
low-lying coastal areas.
