Not true.
I've seen huge boards with 16 plus lines and over 800
doors. But even those had short term users who didn't
say much and a few die hards. Then there were the super
popular ones with only FIVE doors. I myself ran about
50-75 over the years which was good enough for me but
I never switched in and out doors unless they requested it.
Above all in the hay day of bbses the prime rule was that
sysops HAD To be active and enjoy the bbs. A bbs would
surely die if it was stagnat and the sysop never posted
but every 2 years. The users see this and if the sysop
doesn't care why should they.
After that in today's world its just hard to keep users
period. Files can be found anywhere. So a good mix
of good message networks and door games are the best
routes. Then work with the users see what they like and
want.
