Actually, God gave the command, or prohibition, specifically to the man, Adam. We're not told how Eve came by her information, but her response to the serpent indicates she may have added to God's command. Adam was later rebuked not just for eating the fruit, but for listening to his wife as well. The kind of death God describes in Gen 2:17 is the same kind of death both Eve and the serpent refer to in Gen 3:3-4. It is the same kind of death that ended Adam's life after 930 years in Gen 5:5. I think He did say what kind of death. > >I believe that the Bible talks about a death that is simply a >separation from God. Remember until that time Adam and >Eve could freely commune with God and after that time they >could not. Is that not indeed a death? > They could not commune with God? A separation from Him? I take it, this is your definition of spiritual death. What evidence can you produce that they did _not_ commune with God? In fact, the Genesis record declares that _after_ their transgression the Lord clothed both in garments of skin (and this is a very interesting story in itself). Adam and Eve were banished from the garden and the tree of life. Later, beyond garden, Eve declares that she has given birth to a manchild _with God's help_. Furthermore, it is clear their children did commune with God. It was not until after Cain murdered his brother that he, and he alone, was banished from the presence the Lord. Even then, God put a mark on Cain to protect him from death at the hands of others, vowing a sevenfold vengeance on anyone who would kill Cain. Please, don't take my word for it, read the story yourself. Sorry I took so long to respond, it's been a busy week. I'll respond to Matthew tomorrow. 2 ((( s.r.c.b-s is a moderated group.
