Excellent question. I have no idea, but it somehow works.
For example, EVERY message I get from videocam has fidoavtech{at}vidocam.net.au
in the To: field by the time I get it.
This is how I filter messages into their respective groups. I look at the
To:, From: or Reply-To: fields and move messges based on what they contain.
In fact, my domain (techniciansyndrom.org) does not appear in incoming
messages anywhere except in the Received: lines (equivalent to the fido
PATH/SEENBY lines).
