Hi all that have read my OOorg2 reports...
I have spent considerable time today evaluating and investigating the
OO RC1 sluggishness I have recently reported. I am now happy to report
that the problem only occurs when using SMP. On a Uni processor, it's
night and day different to the better side of things.
I installed and ran it on the same machine using a Uni processor
install on eCS 1.0. Whereas a small file save time in Writer was 1:10
min:sec, saving the same file on the 1.0 Uni install was less than 1
second. Overall, the program was much more responsive.
I then remmed out the OS2APIC.PSD file in my SMP partition and had
very similar good results. Unremming back to a SMP config, the
slowness is back.
I know nothing about the OO code but I do know that if the critical
section APIs are used, these bad things happen. I experienced this
some time ago in my FS/2 code. This critical section bug was reported
fixed in a kernel update some time ago, but IMHO, it is not fixed. So
my advice to the dev team for OO, whoever they are, is to get rid of
every DosEnter/ExitCritSec call in the code and the program will be
much more responsive.
The main events that trigger the slowness are saving/opening files and
using pull down or context menus. There are others but those are the
easy ones to see the problem with SMP.
Seeing the program run as I had hoped and expected, I can say that it
really looks quite good at this point - as long as you are running a
uni processor system. And this is on HPFS.
I did both tests with the 14_100 kernel. I have seen no reason to
update so I haven't. But I am willing to bet the later kernels are no
better in this regard. If someone running a leter kernel with SMP
reports a snappy save time on a writer file, I will update.
