Hummmmm.....
Depends on the functionality required.
If you're talking about drawing boxes on the screen then they all need X.
If you're talking about say swapping clipboard info then yes you can
& will have the various methods talking (though possibly over a neutral
object messaging system such as CORBA.)
Other than that, if you want to run KDE apps you'll have to have kde/qt on
baord, if you want to run gnome apps you'll have to have gnome on board
etc.
