subject: Re: Time to get back to OS/2

I agree with Ray in the long term as existing hardware dies out, say
5-10 years, not quite in the immediate here-and-now.

For those taking refuge behind Matrox, I fear they are the Maxtor of the
graphics cards, too good for their own good, steadily being
marginalized, heading towards an inevitable takeover by a bigger
schlockier competitor some time.

One obvious buyer would be M$. What likelihood that they would continue
to sell SNAP with existing levels of OS/2 support, let alone extend OS/2
support to new chipsets?

Wonder why they think SNAP's worth moving away from? Consolidation in
graphics market as AMD buys ATI? (Or another of Intel's strategic
anti-competitive actions behind the scenes?) Something in the design of
Vista which makes it impossible to access the functionality SNAP needs
to touch (the antivirus people are still complaining they can't get to
the parts of core OS code that they need access to...)? Non-graphics use
of the GPUs increasingly fouling up their paradigm?

Now here's a good opportunity for going Open Source, I would think.
With a bit of brain-sweat-and-tears from the Linux gurus, SNAP could
become the dominant industry paradigm for driving peripheral chipsets
(surely Linux distros could do with a massive reduction in the numbers
of drivers for every conceivable device).

Alternatively Bob should be encouraged/helped to buy SNAP just for the
sake of eCS...

How much do they want?
