As I undertand it, there are two types of ECC. One type builds ECC onto the
motherboard. Slow as the error corrections are calculated, compared and
corrected by the board.
The other type places the calc, compare and correct functions on the SIMM
itself. These are the modules that can be used to update nonECC
motherboards. They are also the type we use.
Cost difference was about $2000 for 128 megs, back when memory was $50 per
meg. That's about a 30% increase; WELL worth it for the troubles it stops.

Anything is always possible, however, having changed many motherboards and
memory modules and not having the crashes stop, when all you do is replace
memory with ECC type and have the crashes stop, I have to conclude the
motherboard is not the problem.
