nm> 1) With someone whom you know also has a 56K modem are you
nm> getting a lot of 56k connects? and
That will depend very much on the telephone system. Also, you can't
call just anyone with a 56K modem. You have to call a location that
has a digital connection to the telco and is running a 56K host
modem.
NM> 2) What kind of cps? and
Again, it depends. One user I know had about 5500cps throughput on a
zipped file.
NM> 3) Are you having any regular glitches?
The most common "glitch" is "too many CODECS in circuit", which means
you _can't_ connect at 56K at all.
NM> For all above please identify brand.
There is only one 56K capable brand released at the moment: the USR
Courier using X2 technology. X2 for the Sportsters will be available
soon.
You should be aware that 56K is unlike the other protocols: the
modems come in two versions, user and host. Host modems must be
connected digitally to the telephone system, and that means an ISDN
connection. User modems connect to the standard analogue telephone
system. Transmission speeds _to_ the host are at V.34, but receive
speeds may reach 56K. There are also two protocols, USR's X2
(available now) and K56Flex from Rockwell, not yet available. They
are _different_ protocols, and a K56Flex user will not connect with
an X2 host at anything better than V.34, and vice-versa.
