U.S. ROBOTICS ANNOUNCES 33.6 KBPS V.34 SOFTWARE FOR SPORTSTER

New Software Boosts Throughput at Lower Speeds and Increases
V.34's Top Speed

SKOKIE, Illinois, -- November 3, 1995 -- The Personal
Communications Division of U.S. Robotics (NASDAQ: USRX) today
announced new software for the Sportster line of V.34 desktop
modems that provides a top speed of 33.6 Kbps. The result is
enhanced performance connection between any two modems running
the new V.34 software.

The software provides two new speeds, 33.6 Kbps and 31.2 Kbps,
for the V.34 standard. U.S. Robotics' 33.6 software implements
the new higher speed options inherent in the ITU V.34
recommendations awaiting formal approval. ITU Study Group 14 has
arrived at a technical consensus on V.34 code enhancements that
boosts the top speed of the standard to 33.6 Kbps.

"The ITU has completed its technical and drafting work and will
soon formalize the 31.2 Kbps and 33.6 Kbps enhancements to V.34,"
said Dale Walsh, U.S. Robotics vice president of advanced
development and a member of the ITU committee responsible for
developing V.34 and subsequent additions to the standard. "Our
new software conforms to the enhanced standard. Formal approval
of the enhanced standard will occur at the next Study Group 14
meeting in Geneva."

"Our 33.6 software offers two major advantages," noted Michael
Seedman, vice president and general manager of the Personal
Communications Division. "Not only is the top possible speed
boosted to 33.6, but the overall throughput is significantly
increased. Not all phone lines will support 33.6 Kbps, of
course; but our lab tests indicate the average connection
between two U.S. Robotics products running the new software will
consistently be 2,400 to 4,800 bits per second faster than older
versions of the V.34 code," Seedman noted.

"For example, on a connection where a customer might typically
experience 26,400 bps, it's likely the new software will allow a
connection at 28,800 bps on a regular basis," Seedman added. "We
achieved this increase by tuning our algorithms to support the
higher speeds offered by the enhanced V.34 standard. By pushing
the barrier of higher speeds, we're able to provide a dividend of
faster connections across the entire spectrum of speeds available
with V.34."

The 33.6 software is included in all newly shipping Sportster
desktop products. An EPROM chip replacement containing the new
33.6 software will also be available for owners of current V.34
Sportsters to upgrade their modems. Customers can order the V.34
upgrade chip for $24.95 plus shipping by contacting U.S. Robotics
customer support.
