--- Sez Mark Sheppard to All ---
MS> I am a ProgRock devotee from way back when... I just haven't visited
MS> this echo in ages... I have my own collection of Yes, Genesis, Rush,
MS> etc... records and love them to death. I don't know quite what are
MS> the boundaries of this echo, but I will make a stab and see if I get
MS> "stuck"... :-)
With a sharp stick? Poke! Poke!
MS> I absolutely love the music of Joni Mitchell...
MS> Her sense of timing and dynamics...
And her unwillingness to write any songs with standard guitar tuning
certainly are characteristics that would suggeest "Prog" if she weren't
clearly a "singer-songwriter"! With strong jazz influences, of course,
which doesn't necessarily make her, or for that matter Tim Buckley or
Nick Drake, or even Pentangle Topical, but it's an avenue for discussion
at least, since Jazz, Classical and Psychedelic are certainly among
the roots of Prog... Just don't waste too much effort and bandwidth
trying to redefine Prog to include "Everything I Like". I'm getting too
close to Moderating Without A License right now, so to continue...
MS> I heard rumor awhile back that she died. Can anyone confirm this? I
MS> could never find a news story on it and at this point I don't believe
MS> it. A little light shedding is in order here.
She's alive and well, though she finally allowed her record company to
release a _Hits_ CD, accompanied by a _Misses_ CD too...
MS> Steely Dan... that's a whole nother subject...
I heard "Only A Fool Would Say That" from their first album on the
radio several weeks ago and enjoyed it much more than the usual Dan
you hear over and over. Fagen and Becker produced a fine LP by the Warne
Marsh - Pete Christlieb Quintet whose name I forget right now. Very tasty
small combo bebop with a good version of Bird's "Donna Lee". The boys
know their jazz, it just isn't always evident beneath the sheen of their
SoCal radio friendly platinum Fuzak...
DM
NP: Hot Tuna: "Serpent Of Dreams"
... No problem is so big or complex it can't be run away from!
