I think that was originated on the Chapparal race cars then
moved to the 'rail job' dragsters? 

The funniest of all were the Chryslers with extended nose and a
very high spoiler that they were required to sell to get a
'production' vehicle classification for when they raced them. I
was astonished that people bought these and drove them around
town (in Michigan).
