subject: Cog change

Hi Brian. I'm not sure if I understood your message right. You mention I
should not change my present wheel setup because introducing an 8 speed cog
would cause a weak wheel by introducing a longer axle and having the need to
redish the wheel ... Then you say that it would be okay to get another wheel
with an 8 cog and to spread my stays to fit it in. What is the difference
with using the wheel I have rather than using another wheel? It will need to
be redished anyways. A longer axle does not render the wheel much weaker. All
new bikes have longer axle than my 1985 bike. The problem would be with the
stays I am told by the bike shop. There is so much you can spread them open.
They suggest switching to ergo by using a new 7 speed cog, new chain and a
new rear derailleur.
As for why my chain on my 1994 ergo group bike jumps from big chainring to
the little one every time I hit a major bump is beyond them.
