There's a noticeable volume increase, but not much.  It's really just adding 
a touch of clipping to the first stage.

I'm not sure what it was, because with all of the controls on "10", the stack 
is basically bypassed, though there is still some resistance leading to 
ground, which would be in parallel with the rest of the amp, and is probably 
the source of the loss.

This one uses two EL84 output tubes driven at about 15vdc, but the preamp and 
PI are all TL084 quad op amps.
