Remorse is an emotion one feels making him wish something were
different than it is. E.g., The tax collector felt remorse
for his habit of regularly cheating people

Repentence, sometimes a result of remorse, is the turning away
from sin or a stance. E.g., The tax collector was moved by his
remorse to cease his cheating ways.

Atonement is paying the price for (in our case) sin. NOT in
the sense of a hangover, which may be the price of over-drinking,
but we don't consider having a hangover as "making up for"
over-drinking. The tax collector attempts to atone for his
cheating by paying everyone back 4-fold.

In the theology of the Cross, Jesus' sacrifice atones for all
men's sins because His act "makes up for" all our failings.
The Law, properly preached, moves us to remorse. Remorse
can result in dispair (as for Judas) or repentance (as with Peter.)
