Chrysler Corp tried turbines back in the early '60s; I actually saw one of 
'em running, I think at the '64 World's Fair in NYC.
When my cousin finished his toolmaker's apprenticship, he went to work for 
Ford at a laboratory facility in Toledo, where they were trying to develop a 
turbine engine for heavy trucks.
Needless to say, both companies were unsuccessful in getting a unit to 
market. And it wasn't because they didn't invest some serious $$$!
