ATTENTION
On Thursday September 17th 1997, co-inventor of the two-way radio
Charles Clio Shumard (My Grandfather), past away at the age of 98 in
Princeton, New Jersey.

Charles C. Shumard, Co-invented Walkie-talkie
Charles C. Shumard 98, died Thursday at the Princeton Nursing Home.
Born near Ridgeway, MO., He lived in Hopewell from 1947 to 1983 before
moving to Princeton.
Mr. Shumard was an Electrical Engineer for RCA David Sarnoff
Laboratories in West Windsor, retiring in 1961
He received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the
University of Missouri, Columbia. He was an associate professor at
Georgia Tech University, where he earned a master's degree in
engineering.
After working in RCA's tube division in Harrison, he was transferred to
RCA in Camden, where he co-invented the walkie-talkie, a 2-way radio.
He helped develop computers and early television. He had a television
in his home in 1936.
He was transferred to the David Sarnoff Center in 1955, where he
developed a heat conduction system for the first Tiros satellite.
During his early years with RCA he was responsible for 14 patents and
was listed in "Who's Who in Engineering" for many years.
Husband of the late Ruth Woodward Shumard and Rebecca Schmidt,and
father of the Charles Chadburne, he is survived by two daughters,
Ethel S. "Robin" Mastrocola and Charlotte S. Robertson; Eight
grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Nov. 2 at Cromwell Memorial Home
71 E. Prospect St., Hopewell.
Private Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Hopewell.
