If you have a look into dos.sys you'll notice that the driver registers
itself with the name DOS$. com.sys registers COM1 COM2 etc.

In general, the answer to your question is "no". You just have to
DosOpen the correct name the driver expects.

IBM delivers on the DevCon in AIXLIKE a nice Unix port of
"strings", a program that extracts readable parts from binary
files.
