Ok, Ok, we all know Netcomm modems are shit; but just how shitty are they really?

The reason I ask is that Netcomm are offering Microsoft Communique' members
(me ) AM1710 AutoModem E7F modems for $499, ILO RRP of $999. Now,
_this_ seems like a bargain...

The specs are:

14,400bps data,
14,400bps fax,
fallback as appropriate,
error correction (type not specified),
data compression (type not specified),
Netcomm Cooee Lite for Windows (????),
2 Year warranty.

So, what do think? Are there any questions I should ask of Netcomm before I
buy? If so, what? The offer expires 31-Apr, So I need to know fairly
quickly. Is it all too good to be true? Like they say, "If it seems to
be too good to be true, it probably is!"
