You should have
BASEDEV=CHKDSK.SYS
in config.sys immediately after
BASEDEV=lvm.dmd

Try to set
EARLYMEMINIT=TRUE
in config.sys (sure, no SET). Test it - On some computers the system
would not work or crash when this system variable is set. But this
helps chkdsk.sys to have all memory it needs.

It does definitly NOT work with Adaptec ISA Controllers!

Try it and leave it alone when yor system looses no stability.

Depends on available RAM.
Depends on chkdsk.sys is in config.sys or not.

I've an 32GB volume (80% full) with 512MB RAM. and chkdsk went well
always when needed.
