During the first Oil Crisis, new autos in Japan were provided with engine
cutouts [automatic] so that if the car was stationary for longer than a
certain time, then the engine would stop.
Pushing the gas pedal later, would automatically restart the engine. This
interesting [but unpopular?!] trick cut pollution and saved gas.
I don't have to tell you of the disadvantages of the scheme!!

I too was a cyclist, kept a graph on the wall so as to achieve 100- 200 miles
travel, each week. As you say, one learns a bit about energy conservation!
