Rise of the Triad Level Design Information
Updated February 9, 1997 by Joe Siegler of Apogee Software
=========================================================================
There were several releases of "levels" for Rise of the Triad. Each
release of the game from us had both "regular" levels, and "Comm-Bat"
levels. In addition, depending on which version of Dark War you bought,
you got more Comm-Bat Levels. There were also a couple of freeware
level packs released from us online in addition to the levels released
with various editions of the game.
1) Rise of the Triad: The HUNT Begins
This was the name of the shareware episode that was first released in
December 1994. The shareware episode cannot use any of the level packs
mentioned below. It is restricted to it's own levels.
2) Rise of the Triad: The HUNT Begins Deluxe Edition
This is a special version of the shareware episode distributed ONLY
by LaserSoft. This version had 6 levels that were unavailable in
ANY other version of Rise of the Triad. Three of them were regular
levels, and three of them were Comm-Bat Levels.
2) Rise of the Triad: Dark War
Dark War was the name of the registered version. It first started
shipping in February of 1995. It was available in a floppy disk version,
a floppy disk upgraded version, a CD version, and a CD Site License
version. The Floppy disk upgraded version was equal in content (game
wise) to the CD version, but for obvious reasons, there was a reduced
amount of "goodies" on the disk based version.
3) Rise of the Triad: Dark War Site License CD
We also offered (still do) a Site License version of the game. It
contained everything on the regular CD version, but the Site License
Version offered two other things. One was that it was licensed
for play on 11 machines. The Site License version also has 14 more
Comm-Bat Levels than were available with the regular Dark War game.
4) Reject Pack
Released to the net for free in July 1995, this pack of levels were
levels designed by the various designers for the original Dark War
game, but for some reason or another got cut from the game. If you
look at these, you can see why in some of them. :) The text file
that accompanies this pack explains some of the history of all these
levels.
5) Extreme Rise of the Triad
"EROTT" (as we call it) is an addon pack designed by Joe Siegler &
Tom Hall as an add-on in November 1995. It is a pack of 42 new levels
for Dark War, using tricks and traps never thought of before. Also
on the CD are level editors (including the one we used), maps, and
other goodies.
6) Ohio Comm-Bat Pack
In February 1996, a college in Ohio was running a game playing contest,
and Apogee donated a few items to use as prizes. In addition, as a
"last hurrah" for Rise of the Triad, Tom Hall & Joe Siegler whipped
up a 4 level Comm-Bat level pack for the event. After the event
was over, the pack was released to the public for free.
Here is a listing of all the levels for Rise of the Triad, and who
designed them. The vast bulk of levels were done by Tom Hall, so to
avoid typing his name all the time, assume it was done by Tom Hall
unless you see a name after the level.
