I just thought I would post some info we received from the local Army
recruiter regarding the use of ritalin, dexidrine, etc by an individual and
its relationship to acceptance for enlistment in any of the military
rvices.
In a nutshell, if an individual has taken any of these medicines after the
age of 12, he/she is automatically disqualified from military service. These
meds are considered mind altering drugs by the services.
The San Antonio Express (mid Nov) and the Dayton Daily News (mid Dec) both
carried the same article on this subject. In addition to the automatic
disqualification, the article implied that the military considered people
with ADHD as undesirable recruits, as they were considered training problems.
This has put my teenager in a bit of a tizzy, as he has his heart set on
enlisted in the Army and taking advantage of the educational benefits after
his term of service is over. Short of lying, I don't see any way around
this. (we do not advocate lying on official documents btw :-* )
I remember that there was a thread going on this a while back...wanted to get
the "straight poop" out.
Cheers,
Lucy
