I am a beginner my self and many times I have asked the same question.  To
my disappointment, all the books that have been suggested to me come with a
ready made conviction from the writers point of view.

My next step was to attend Bible Studies where the study is directly from
the Bible and with the guidance from the Holy Spirit and criscross
discussions between the people involved a clearer picture of the Word
emerges.

For my daily  devotions  I use the "OUR DAILY BREAD".  Published by RBC
Ministries.  It is a pocket size booklet.  Each day it has a verse from
Bible that it concentrates on and gives a suggestion for additional reading
in the Bible.

As an example:  For March 1st it suggests to read Revelations 22: 1-5.  And
it expends on Revelations 22:3.
