Just a thought after you mentioned this. I have pretty much the same thing
except it converts postscript files into PDF (they drop the .ps file into
the IN directory and a PDF appears in the OUT directory). If these docs
never change you could just print them, convert to PDF (which will reduce
the graphics size automatically) and store them as pdf files instead of doc
files.
