I dunno, the shell example is too niche, think back to when CD drives were
first becoming popular and how long it took before vendors could assume
most people had CD drives.

Yes but the fact that the first thing you do is check for bash proves that
it's not reached critical mass yet where you can just assume most people
have it already.
