Here's a question for the LEOS in this conference. I recently had the
opportunity to assist an officer from a nearby community in rigging his
duty walkie talkie to enable him to pick up conversations in undercover
situations.
Now I don't know that I would want to use a multi channel, scanning
Motorola handheld for such duty because of it's bulk, but apparantly
the financial situation in his department leaves him with no other
choices.
The way he wanted to "rig" the unit is what bothers me; and I would
invite other opinions. Rather than have the unit pick up ALL of the
conversations,(and transmit to nearby unit w/recorder) he wanted to
selectively turn the transmit on and off rather than record without
operation.
This type of setup bothers me, in that I think that a good defense
attorney having this officer on the stand, after finding out that he
was turning the transmitter on and off arbitrarily, would tear him
up and accuse him of turning the transmitter/recorder on only when
inculpatory statements were being made.
Any opinions?
