subject: Surely the disciples did not stay a whole 40 days!

When I read Luke chapter 24 and Acts 1:1-11, I get the impression that
Luke thought that most of Jesus' disciples stayed in (or very near)
Jerusalem some 40 days, from the time he was raised from the dead till
Jesus "was lifted up, and a cloud took him up out of their sight."
(According to Luke, even the two who started to walk from Jerusalem to
Emmaus, die not complete their journey but turned around and returned
to Jerusalem.) In fact, as I read Acts, Luke seems to suggest that the
disciples even stayed in or near Jerusalem till Pentecost!

Surely, the eleven did not stay in the vicinity of Jerusalem for 40 or
50 days before they left Jerusalem to return home to Galilee. Is Luke
suggesting that they did not return to Galilee until a whole 40 days
after his resurrection?

Have I misread Luke and Acts?
