TA>my seedings for my tomatoes yesterday. I generally start
TA>then at Easter time.
I'm thinking of starting some today. But Ack, you have to be prepared
to transplant early tomatoes into progressively larger containers if
the weather is unsuitable for outdoors planting. This is a real
consideration if you have limited space and/or a huge number of
plants. But I am cutting way down on the dozens of tomatoes I used to
plant; so between my 3-tier light table and 2 cold frames, I should be
able to handle it. Those large root systems are very important to
raise good plants. Just hope we don't have such a stinker of a tomato
year, like we did in 97.
TA>Are there any other super optimist out there anticipateing
TA>an early spring planting this year?
I'm starting spinach and broccoli in cubes, with the intention of
planting them outdoors in a couple weeks (inside a moveable cold frame
, of course.) We can till as soon as the ground dries enough, since
the frost is out of the ground, and has been most of Feb.
TA>When should we start our peas and beans this year?
Peas can go in as soon as the ground can be worked. Beans HAVE to have
warm soil, with no danger of frost. Ever planted a row of beans and
noticed how spotty germination came? That's what usually happens if
you have cool damp weather, or a light frost, after sowing, but before
the beans sprout. Now I wait for warm settled weather, and the beans
figuratively explode from the ground, and overtake earlier beans in
short order. That usually means early June here, but if you have the
means to protect sprouted beans from an unexpected frost (like sheets
of newspaper tented over top), then you may risk earlier plantings
than normal.
