You are trying to mask the symptoms rather than cure the disease.  It is 
obvious that his end is suffering from some kind of buffer overrun.  Perhaps 
he doesn't have a 16550 Uart, or perhaps its trigger level could be set a tad 
lower.  Sometimes, having the Bios set to do "long block transfers" (disk 
I/O) will keep the machine busy long enough during disk writes to mask 
interrupts long enough for the CRCs to occur.
The only thing I can think of as far as your end goes is that your mailer is 
somewhat intolerant of the string "CRC", or perhaps it is timing out while 
the modems are attempting to sort things out.
