Sounds like a plan, but if you really intend to hit stuff at 500 yards or 
more, I really suggest a bolt action.  SKS's are fun to 'screw around 
with' for usre, but they can also be very formidable when used 
appropriately.  Ask any viet-nam era veteran.  :-(
