Some cities or municipalities HAVE been successful at imposing a total ban on
cyclists, and with the blessing of not only the Provincial Government but of
the RCMP as well. Just west of calgary is a secondary highway which links the
towns of Springbank and Bragg Creek to Calgary. The good Tory (read that
Filthy [insert appropriate expletive] Rich Tories) decided that we cyclists
have quite frankly been getting in their way while they were commuting to and
from work with their cell phones glued to their ears and their brains stuck
in neutral. The council decided arbitrarily to ban cyclists from this
secondary highway so as not to pose a hazzard to motorists. This action is
now being challenged before the Supreme Court of Canada but seems to be mired
in beurocratic bs temporarily. If this challenge is lost, cycling in Canada
is doomed. We'll all have to purchase a chase car equiped with flashing
lights to drive both in front of us and behind just to notify other motorists
that there is a cyclist on the road. This more or less defeats the whole
purpose of human powered conveyances such as bicycles. If this trend
continues we might as well retire our bikes to the garage rafters, grow roots
into our couches and become just another "Fat Tory" (much like a certain Mr.
Klein and Mr. Harris).
