OEO>If the ship exceeds 12 hours at WF9.6, or 10 seconds at WF9.9, the warp
OEO>propulsion system shuts down automatically to avoid damage
OEO>to the drive system unless overridden by Engineering and
OEO>the Bridge. If they reduce speed, they can continue
OEO>normally. If they override the auto-shutdown, they risk
OEO>damage to the drives. The auto-shutdown merely drops them
OEO>out of warp and in effect turns the warp core off. They
OEO>can start up again, going through a normal startup cycle.
Thank you for pointing that out. Dur, I had forgotten.
OEO> JPH> Warp 6 supposedly equals 392c or just more than 1 light year per
day.
OEO> JPH> liked that. It made travel time round, even though it makes some
thi
OEO> JPH> hard to explain (How come the Eneterprise-D runs into problems
very
OEO> JPH> seven light years?).
OEO> JPH> The Voyager (Darn them) supposedly was able to maintain a warp
.975
OEO> JPH> cruising speed. This annoys me.
OEO>Nowhere was it stated that Voyager's *cruising speed* was WF9.975. It
as
OEO>stated on screen that its *maximum sustainable* speed was
OEO>WF9.975. In other words, it can do that speed for 12 hours
OEO>before autoshut-down.
Okay. Thank you. Thank make sense.
OEO>Voyager's standard cruise speed is
OEO>the same as that of the Galaxy Class - that's an
OEO>operational limit imposed by regulations, like the 55MPH
OEO>you 'Murricans have on your highways, or the 100km/h we
OEO>have up here in the GWN.
OEO>CFN, O
Didn't they specify that the Voyager had the new "Green"
engines? Those are the ones that don't damage space so that they don't
have to poke along. I think I remember that being specified, but for
the life of me I can't remember where.
That warp 5 limit restricts the ships to approximately 2/3 of a
light year per day. That is interestiing, but a little more difficult
to role play.
I went ahead and assumed "Green" engines that allowed the warp
6 cruise so that the ships were still doing 1 ly per day.
Off topic, here. The U.S. recently abandoned the 55mph national
limit. On many highways the limit is now 65 or 70. I hear the state
of Montanna has *no* upper limit during daylight hours. The only
penalty is some form of reckless driving. It costs $5, and you can pay
it to the police when they pull you over. That's what I hear, anyway.
A friend and I took a road trip to Vancouver in 1992. You
should have heard the noises he made when we crossed the border and saw
the big "100" speed limit sign. I knew that it was metric, but my
friend was honestly afraid that I'd go ahead and try to cruise my old
hoopty at 100mph.
But this is on topic, see, because I have often gone to
Missoula, Montanna for MisCon where we some times discuss Trek
and that's lot's of fun. My friend and I some times watch Star Trek
together, but it rarely makes him scream like that.
BTW What exactly does "CFN, O" mean? I know it's how Owen E.
Oulton signs his posts, but I wonder what the specifics are?
