The atmosphere does not shield from gamma radiation, I would think, at
least not from much. Distance, well, we're not all that far from the sun,
are we? Also, we get measurable amounts of gamma radiation even from other
galaxies (gamma ray astronomy exploits that fact), though of course not in
amounts that would be harmful.

Well, I suppose we will never know for certain since we can't look directly
into the sun and see what's really going on. ;)
