The Braves traded Stephen Frazier to the Pirates for saying:
SF> Gee, Ed. YOU read it again. I do believe you just quoted me almost
SF> verbatim.
NO, I DIDN'T. You said:
SF> played. Maddox, as good as he is, tends to make ONE mistake per loss
SF> and that is the mistake that kills him. Smoltz makes LOTS of
SF> mistakes, but they are usually non lethal ones. As a result, Smoltz
SF> gets into more trouble, but pitches through it better than Maddox,
SF> who gets into hardly any trouble at all.
I said:
EG> For a guy who says that he heard or saw every game, you certainly
EG> don't show it. ANY mistake the MaddUx made was lethal because he got
EG> damn little in run support. Smoltz could afford to make mistakes
EG> because he had a lot more to work with in terms of runs.
You said that Smoltz's pitched through it better than MaddUx, which isn't
true. His mistakes didn't hurt as much because he had MORE to work with. If
he had as pathetic run support as MaddUx, he'd have had a record that was
around the same. Even the Braves' announcers pointed out how Smoltz was
getting much more run support than MaddUx and even went so far as to estimate
what MaddUx's record would have been if he had been given the kind of support
that John got.
SF> We won't know until we know, right?
We know. MaddUx has been a far superior pitcher with FAR LESS run support
than Smoltz.
