Hi Rod,
Russell posted these stats in USR_Modems today, and I've forwarded them to
you just in case you missed them. The frequency response plot is
particularly interesting, and assuming as near as dammit to 0dB loss for
the link, that almost dead flat -10dBm Tx level is actually 5dB less than
the modem's reported Tx level, so I presume that it had automatically
adjusted itself accordingly (the curve is plotted right at the beginning of
the connect, as you know).
I wondered about that reported retrain for a while too. Thought it was a
bit odd on such a great link, then the penny dropped. I bet that Russ
returned on line with ATO2 (which forces a transparent retrain).

The Stats below come from connecting two Identical USR Courier
V.Everything Internal modems (using the 1st Nov SDL) via a
2 metre phone cable and transferring a 1.4meg file across the link.
This is the PERFECT LINK and the stats can be used as a standard
When comparing real PSTN line stats.
Transferring the file (300teru.zip) at 1432682 bytes
across the link at 33600 resulted in 3883cps
in a time of 6 minutes 10 seconds
Transferring the file (300teru.zip) at 1432682 bytes
across the link locked at 28800 resulted in 3329cps
in a time of 7 minutes 15 seconds
This means that a 33600 connect is a full 1 minute
faster per 1.4meg floppy disk.
With some long distance sessions costing $1/per minute
a 33600 Courier IS worth considering.
