If a kid understand the concept of addition, the timed tests
serve to make the basic "facts" almost automatic. To me it's
almost like learning the "keyboard" of math. When one first
learns typing one has to briefly think about how to produce the
correct letter. Through rote practice, the process becomes
automatic (hopefully ).
