Ken Hrynchuk wrote the following to Charles Jennings, and I quote (in part):
CJ>> If I enter "g:\sx\xpreadp" from the DOS command
line (no batch)
CJ>> there is no problem. The same for "command /K g:\sx\xpreadp".

No I haven't tried that. I have been working with the batch
file and have never tried the PIF at all. I created a shortcut to
the batch file on the desktop and have always used that. All
test have been via that shortcut. Guess what? Executing the PIF
cures the problem here without the COMMAND /SWITCH!
Let me know it this works for you.
My normal procedure is to create a shortcut to a batch file and
then execute the shortcut. It looks like the better way to go is
to copy the PIF rather than creating a shortcut.
If you execute 2.bat as a command inside of 1.bat you never
return to 1.bat. You have to use CALL 2.bat if you want to return.
However, if you use START 2.PIF instead, you DO return to 1.bat.
Thanks,
Charles
