On the 2008 A&E program "Private Sessions" Ringo was asked about the
situation.  He said he was born left handed, but his Grandmother taught
him how to WRITE right handed.  This was very common until many years
later.  He also explained that his drum kit is set up for a right handed
drummer, and demonstrated why that makes it hard for him to do certain
fills. 

The rest of the interview was entertaining, but didn't uncover much new
information.
