What I have, and am using for web access on the odd occasion I need it, is Lynx. It is a text browser, and does news as well as http. I'm told by my wizard that it comes in a 386 version, which you'd want (and which we're using). He tried it once, put in the URL for the newsserver, and it worked. I've never done it, but it should work for you. If you can't find it, we've got it... it's freeware. (The fully maintained versions are for Windows and Linux.)
