Consequently, the system is set up to encourage frivilous filings and
frivilous appeals for the sole purpose of allowing a person to remain in
this country under the color of law with permission to be employed
because they filed a fraudulent claim of asylum.
JH> RC> AFAIC, the only principles to be considered in immigration
JH> RC> and naturalization policy should be 1) to offer refuge for
JH> RC> victims of repression and 2) to reflect the demographics of
JH> RC> American society.
JH> Why do we have to consider immigrants based on our demographics?
JH> Sounds rather Swedish to me.
It's based on economics actually. Jobs. And now, social services (read
welfare). ie. $$$.
Take the construction trades. In the 80s, wages were averaging
$15.00/hr. Now, due to a massive influx of illegal aliens in the
construction trades, average wages are around $9.00/hr.
IOW, illegal immigration has resulted in wage depression in certain
professions. One can argue that this is healthy for the economy since it
makes construction contractors more competitive and lowers the prices of
houses and makes them more affordable.
However, consider this. Who would you rather build your house, a person
who is sufficiently educated and can measure, add and subtract, is
literate and can read a blueprint? Or one who is illiterate, can't
perform simple arithmetic functions, can't read, or measure?
I don't know about you, but I'd be willing to pay a bit more money to
insure that my house is built properly.
IOW, you get what you pay for.
JH> RC> BTW, the ONLY totalitarian regime from which refugees can
JH> RC> reach us without passing thru some other country in which
JH> RC> they could take refuge is Cuba. Ignoring for the moment the
JH> RC> occasional North Korean who jumps ship in an American
JH> RC> harbor, the majority of hardship refugee immigrants should
JH> RC> be Cuban.
JH> You don't consider China a totalitarian regime?
He considers China a totalitarian regime, however they generally have to
go through other countries to get here.
As for Cubans, having worked the Mariel Boat Lift and having to deal
with these wonderful folks, I'm here to tell you that the prisons are
full of Mariel Cubans who are very dangerous. Castro was so nice to give
us "his poor, his huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the teeming
refuse from his shore". The prostitutes, the insane, the hard core
criminals. Yep, human rights are a wonderful thing as Jimmy Carter
found.
