Hi, Jeff;
[Megasnip]
II> I would be very intereted to see such a comparison to see if the
II> tassle type is really equal to the 2-wire type or if the resonance
II> of the of the longer leg disrupts the resonance of the higher
II> frequency portion.
...
JE> Let's hope it works out, because I plan on working with this design
JE> sometime this week. I've got a little running around to do in the
JE> morning, but plans are to get my 75m antenna down from the other QTH,
JE> where I was, and put it up here.
Ah, the "joys" of moving... If I never have to move again it will be too
soon to suit me!
JE> I'm convinced that this is going to turn out to be a decent RF area,
JE> since I was heard with favorable reports in Dallas, Houston and other
JE> parts of Texas, this morning. This, on 75m, with a 40m antenna, and
JE> the pi-output of the Hallicrafter HT-37.
WOW! FB OM!
II> My GUESS would be that the 2-wire type would outperform the
II> tassle type by some percentage... possibly a dB or so, possibly
II> several dB. Please let me know how your experiments turn out!
JE> Not a problem. As I've said, I plan on starting the antenna
JE> construction, tomorrow.
JE> Well, right now I'm still working on getting one of my old
JE> transmitters running again, so I CAN try some antenna experimentation.
JE> Did! Found out that a 2.5milli Henry RF choke had died. Futher
JE> operation of the rig has shown me that there was an intermittent
JE> cathode-to-grid short in the 12BY7A driver tube. Replaced it, strung
JE> some other chokes together, and replaced the 2.5 with those, and I'm
JE> back on the air!
That's how the Hams do it! ;-]
JE> Been in touch with Ruthie/AA2IO and her husband, John, sent me some
JE> exact replacements. Good people, the Cunliffe's - I asked for one
JE> choke, and got 5 sent here :-)
GREAT! You don't find service like THAT very often these days!
II> If it's successful and equal in performance to the multi-wire
II> version, it's a heck of a good idea which should spread like wildfire,
II> (especially among people like myself who are limited in both money and
II> ability to convince the landlord to allow yet another antenna on the
II> property!) ;-}
JE> All you need is the land to run a 75m antenna, Ivy, and try it for
JE> yourself. Let me know how you make out.
Heh heh...that's a dream! The ONLY place I can sneak up a wire dipole is
on the end of the apartment building, (Make it look like guy wires for
the PVC pipe holding the VHF J-pole that the landlord doesn't seem to have
noticed yet). That space is only about 32 Ft. from eave to eave, so the
longest dipole I could put up would be 20M, and Tech Plus don't go there,
so I'm a bit limited. Also, I am looking for a suitable HF rig for a
few $$. (I am disabled and must depend on Social (IN)Security so money
is tight here... and the BBS & networking takes most of what's left over
after the nice things, like rent, utilities, food...)
I can remember back in my Novice days, (about to 20 years ago), sneaking
up within KHz from the carrier of an International BC station and calling
CQ... Made some nice contacts that way. The IBC carrier seemed to boost
me along. (That was CW, BTW!)
JE> you operate CW, Ivy? I've been hanging around 7.040MHz (+/-)
No, right now the only band I'm on is 2M FM with a 5W brick and a
homebrew 6 dB co-linear J-pole. (See above).
I'm a Tec Plus, going for General next month, and I'll probably stay
there. But with the space limitations here I doubt I'll be getting
down below 15 Meters in the forseeable future unless I use the club
station at the Red Cross. Also, I'm not much of a CW lover. I prefer
voice and want to get into packet, including linking my phone BBS to
to a packet BBS. Though when the question comes up of whether there
should be a code requirement for ALL Hams, IMO, it SHOULD be required.
I would go along with 10 WPM for all classes General and up, though.
Reason: CW can get through when nothing else can... but let's not get
into that fight here, ok?
JE> and can
JE> usually be heard later on in the evening... or during the night (2,
JE> 3am... when it's COOL around here!)
[Grin!] Just because I'm over 1,000 miles North of you it does get well
into the 90's here, (when you are in the 110s). I'm fortunate enough
to have a window air conditioner to keep me (and the computers) in the
70's. :->
